Frequently Asked Questions About Light Diesel Repairs in Buda, TX
What light diesel trucks and engines do you specialize in at Local Automotive?
We specialize in 3/4-ton, 1-ton, and light commercial diesel trucks and vans, including:
- Ford Powerstroke: 6.0L, 6.4L, 6.7L, and 3.0L Powerstroke engines.
- Chevy / GMC Duramax: 6.6L (LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, L5P) and 3.0L Duramax engines.
- RAM Cummins: 5.9L and 6.7L Turbo Diesel engines.
Why are dual fuel filter changes so important on Powerstroke, Duramax, and Cummins diesels?
Modern common-rail diesel injection systems operate at extreme fuel pressures (up to 30,000+ PSI). Dirt, rust particles, or tiny amounts of water in fuel will ruin high-pressure fuel pumps (like Bosch CP4 pumps) and fuel injectors, causing catastrophic repairs that can cost thousands. Replacing primary and secondary fuel filters every 10,000 to 15,000 miles prevents fuel system contamination.
What causes my truck to enter "Limp Mode" or show DPF / DEF system error codes?
Modern diesel emissions systems use a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to catch soot and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to lower NOx emissions. Limp mode (reduced engine power) triggers when the DPF cannot complete a heat regeneration cycle, DEF fluid degrades or freezes, DEF tank heaters burn out, or NOx sensors fail. We perform computerized forced DPF regenerations and repair emissions sensors.
What causes oil leaks on light diesel engines, and why is oil choice critical?
Diesels generate high internal combustion pressures and heavy soot levels, which break down low-grade oil rapidly. Using heavy-duty diesel engine oil rated CJ-4/CK-4 (such as 15W-40 or 5W-40 full synthetic) protects turbocharger bearings from coking and oil starvation. Common leak areas include valve cover gaskets, oil cooler O-rings, turbo feed lines, and rear main seals.
What is "Stiction" in 6.0L / 7.3L Powerstroke engines, and how do you fix cold-start misfires?
Stiction is varnish and oil sludge buildup inside Hydraulically Actuated Electronically Controlled Unit Injectors (HEUI). It causes severe cold-start engine misfires, rough idling, and hesitation until the engine warms up. We fix stiction using synthetic oil flushes, specialized friction-reducing oil additives, or injector harness/spool valve repairs.
